Key dates of the Bucharest Intensive Study Programme 2022
- Time frame:
- digital programme from mid March - June 2022.
- On-site ERASMUS workshop: probably in May, exact to dates depend on local COVID regulations (to be announced)
- Host: Bucharest University of Economic Studies
- Key partner: monumentfor.ro
- Focus Challenge: Sustainable Cities and Communities, validating cultural heritage and reuse concepts for historical buildigs
- Community and workshop location: Sector 1 in Bucharest and ASE Bucharest Campus
- Participants: students and staff members from the ERASMUS partnership, ASE Bucharest staff, Sector 1 stakeholders and citizens
About our key partner - Monument For
- The General Directorate of Landscape Architecture and Public Monuments – named MOMUMENT FOR, is a public institution within the authority of General Council of Bucharest and under the Bucharest City Hall administrative structure.
- Its attributions and activities rely on the administration of Bucharest public monuments, as part of the tangible cultural heritage, including activities related to conservation, restoration, protection, verification, inventory, evidence, maintenance, location of existing monumental works, but also encouraging new public works, created by the contemporary emerging and well-known artists.
- Another activity of the Monument for is developing Bucharest Cultural Touristic Register, including all the city tangible and intangible cultural heritage, managing tourist information points, tourists’ cultural city routes, cultural programs development, projects and cultural activities designed to increase the attractiveness of the city as a tourist destination, at national and international level.
Identified challenges and needs are structured into 3 main sections:
Community engagement
- Monument for needs to engage more the local community in monitoring the tangible cultural heritage status, especially the monumental heritage, in terms of preventing degradation and vandalization. Implying the civic community in preserving the public monuments from being destroyed by cultural heritage education and direct involvement helps our staff to reduce the costs in restauration and support the local community to be aware of their cultural identity and on the cultural, historical, economical value of the cultural heritage.
- The poor cultural heritage digitization and integration into the formal curricula leads to a lack of education at the level of national pre-university education system;
Challenge 1
Finding ways to enhance the local community involvement into preserving the local cultural heritage.
Improving institutional professional responses to administer the local cultural heritage
- Monument for needs to rely on public policies and cultural strategies at national and local level, as a local administration structure responsible for the preservation and valorization of the cultural tangible and intangible heritage, being a unique public institution responsible for the cultural heritage.
- Its activities must be recognized as an essential public service for the cultural heritage preservation and generating activities and professional expertise in preserving and promoting cultural heritage with the support of local community in its practical activities regarding the monitoring of possible deteriorations and monuments vandalization.
- On the level of public cultural policies, we are confronted with a poor identification of the concept of monumental heritage, being integrated into the tangible one, both from a cultural point of view and from its economic potential.
Challenge 2
Finding methods of institutionally recognizing activities at the level of public institutions (central and local authorities) as well as connections to the civil society individuals and associations engaged in cultural heritage preservation.
Communication
- Monument for develops a complex external communication process with all the important stakeholders that support its activities, programs and projects on: cultural heritage education, monitoring the preservation of the public monuments from being damaged by any conflictual or natural causes (e.g. waste from birds affecting the public monuments).
- Communication includes social networks as a powerful tool of engaging community on acting and taking direct measures and identifying solutions to the identified needs.
Challenge 3
Finding certain solutions to address the above mentioned issues, that rely on combining attractive tools used by certain public segments as the young ones, based on the pay-forward concept, gamification reward systems, etc.
